Before I proceed, below is Wikipedia's definition of Social Network:

A social network service focuses on the building and verifying of online social networks for communities of people who share interests and activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others, and which necessitates the use of software.

Most social network services are primarily web based and provide a collection of various ways for users to interact, such as chat, messaging, email, video, voice chat, file sharing, blogging, discussion groups, and so on.


I just gone through a review of available social networking services on the internet, and checked the ranking as well. Some of the service never been heard before, maybe for some of you might have heard of them. As for me, I was like: "Does this site even exist?".

Well, here they are! The top 10 Online Free Social Networking Websites. Check them out and compare.


1. MySpace

Who don't know what MySpace is? I bet everyone know about this one. It has been marked as the largest and in number 1 spot amongst all other social networking.

MySpace has become synonymous with chat rooms and circles of friends and with over 70 million members worldwide; it lives up to its reputation as the best social networking website on the Internet. MySpace isn’t just for teenagers; young and old can reap the benefits of MySpace. Share ideas, participate in serious discussions or start a romance.

MySpace has a great variety of features for creating a customized profile page and plenty of extras like listening to the latest music or watching the last episode of your favorite TV show.

hi5.com is a social networking internet service similar to Friendster and MySpace. Users create an online profile by answering questions and uploading a user picture. Users can send friend requests to other users. When this person receives said friend request, he or she may accept or decline the friend request or block the user altogether. If the user accepts this person as their friend then they will be connected directly or in the 1st degree. The user will then appear on the person's friend list and vice-versa.

Users have the option to make their profile viewable only to those people who are in their Network. Your network of friends consists of your direct friends (1st degree), the friends of your direct friends (2nd degree) and the friends of the friends of your direct friends (3rd degree). Other users opt to make their profile available to view to everyone on hi5.

Facebook is a free social networking website made up of hundreds of separate networks based around schools, business and region. The minimum age to join is 13. Facebook is strictly for connecting with people online; they don’t have extras like music, videos, games, classifieds, etc.

The website design is straightforward; it has few graphics or decoration, but they have a good variety of networking features.
